John Farnham. King of Pop. Australian icon. The voice of a generation. But as a struggling, middle-aged father during the height of Australia’s rock revolution, his story could have turned out very differently.
In a suburban Melbourne garage in 1986, Farnham, alongside his new band and manager Glenn Wheatley, began working on an album — and a song called You're the Voice — that would change their lives forever. It’s the story of an “overnight success” that had actually been 20 years in the making.
Marking the 40th anniversary of Australia’s highest-selling album, Whispering Jack, Sydney Theatre Company and Artistic Director Mitchell Butel team up with Michael Cassel Group (producers of Hamilton and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), TalentWorks (Finding the Voice) and acclaimed writer Jack Yabsley (Gold Diggers) to bring Farnham’s life, humour and musical legacy to the stage.
Whispering Jack: The John Farnham Musical celebrates not only timeless hits like Pressure Down, Age of Reason, Two Strong Hearts and That's Freedom, but also the friendships, family and determination behind one of Australia’s greatest musical icons. 🎭🎶
