Heavily pregnant and alone in a remote Snowy Mountains shanty, Molly Johnson faces snakes, bullocks, and hostile travelers while her husband is away droving sheep. When Yadaka, an Aboriginal man evading colonial authorities, arrives and disrupts her hard-won sanctuary, their shared history of brutal hardships comes to the fore.
The Drover’s Wife is a monumental new opera based on Leah Purcell’s acclaimed play, novel, and film, with a ravishing score by George Palmer. Grand opera traditions meet contemporary Aboriginal storytelling, brought to life by Australia’s newest opera star, Nina Korbe.
