Sheltering

Under the constellation of Bangarra’s creative and cultural legacy, experience a program of three compelling works—Keeping Grounded, Brown Boys, and Sheoak—each honouring the company’s past while looking boldly toward its future.

An intergenerational thread weaves through this striking triple-bill, drawing deeply on First Nations perspectives and offering a moving journey into the intricate relationships between people and place. Grounded in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge, the idea of shelter becomes a sacred, transformative space: a place of protection, connection, and the sharing of stories across generations.

Keeping Grounded, choreographed by Indjalandji-Dhidhanu and Alyewarre woman Glory Tuohy-Daniell, reflects on our energetic relationship with the earth and ancestral land. Originating in Dance Clan 2023 and reimagined for a new stage, the work examines the struggle to remain culturally and physically grounded in a world increasingly shaped by technology.

Brown Boys is a pioneering dance film from directors Daniel Mateo and Cass Mortimer Eipper. Visually lyrical and deeply personal, it explores the experiences of young Indigenous men—identity, belonging, and cultural connection. Inspired by Mateo’s own poetry, the film offers an intimate portrait of his journey as a Gamilaroi and Tongan man, blending movement, narrative, and cinematic craft. It was first presented in Dance Clan 2024.

Sheoak, choreographed by Mirning woman Frances Rings with music by renowned Munaldjali and Nunukul composer David Page, is a resonant work about resilience, cultural identity, and connection to Country. Premiering in 2015 as part of the double bill Lore under the artistic direction of Munaldjali and Nunukul man Stephen Page, the piece draws strength and symbolism from the sheoak tree—an enduring figure in Indigenous Australian culture known for its adaptability and spiritual significance.

Together, these three works speak to essential First Nations social and cultural themes, reminding us of the spirit at the heart of Indigenous worldviews and the enduring relationships between people, land, and the unseen.
