Experience Max Richter Performed by Anna Lapwood – Sydney Symphony Orchestra
Wed, Mar 25, 2026 20:00 PM - Sat, Mar 28, 2026 22:00 PM
Description
Anna Lapwood performs Max Richter
A Universe of Sound
Max Richter’s music speaks straight to the heart — at once vast, immediate and deeply human. ABC Classic calls him an “expert in presenting an emotion or a feeling.” Fresh from its 2025 BBC Proms debut, his luminous concerto for organ, orchestra and choir, Cosmology, now receives its Australian premiere.
Co-commissioned by the Sydney Symphony and written for — and performed by — Anna Lapwood, one of classical music’s brightest stars, Cosmology becomes a radiant showcase for her presence and her natural gift for connection. Lapwood brings emotional clarity to Richter’s slow-burning harmonies and glowing textures, guiding the work toward its breathtaking final surge.
Kristina Arakelyan’s striking Toccata, also written for Lapwood and making its Australian premiere, opens the program with percussive energy and bold contrasts — an evocative burst that sets the tone for what’s to come.
Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra then unleashes the Sydney Symphony in full force. Bursting with colour and invention, it moves between striding basslines, folk-tinged winds and eerie whispers of flute and brass before racing into a blazing, triumphant finale. It’s a work that both challenges and celebrates an orchestra at its absolute peak.
Spanning glowing stillness to symphonic fire, this program reveals sound in all its dimensions.
Please note: Max Richter is not performing in this concert.
