Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony: A Live Orchestral Experience
Wed, Jun 17, 2026 20:00 PM - Sat, Jun 20, 2026 22:00 PM
Description
Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony
It begins with the four most famous notes in music—a legendary motif that ignites the entire first movement of Beethoven’s Fifth.
The symphony’s power never lets up, driving from those iconic opening beats toward the blazing light of its finale. The transition from the third to fourth movement is pure electricity: strings suspended in breathless tension before bursting into one of classical music’s most triumphant releases.
Returning after a Sydney debut in 2024 that “brought the house down” (Limelight), conductor Anja Bihlmaier brings clarity, intensity and warmth to this rich, century-spanning program.
Australian composer Melody Eötvös’ The Saqqara Bird fills the Concert Hall with atmospheric mystery. Inspired by an ancient Egyptian artifact, the work shimmers with shifting shapes, shadows, and sonic intrigue.
Schumann’s Cello Concerto is an introspective, lyrical treasure—its opening movement hovering between hope and melancholy, its second movement a soft, intimate murmur, and its finale a spirited, dancing burst of energy. Rising soloist Ivan Karizna, “a breathtaking and special musician” (Süddeutsche Zeitung), brings fresh insight to this compact, heartfelt concerto.
From quiet revelation to enduring strength, this program is a powerful reminder of music’s ability to lift us into the light.
